Caffeine and ADHD

April 7th, 2010

A friend of mine once told me that her ADHD son drank a cup of coffee every morning before school. She observed a beneficial effect between caffeine and ADHD and was able to avoid medicating her son.

The conneciton between the stimulant caffeine and ADHD makes sense. After all, what is the first thing thrown at children to take care of their ADHD symptoms? A stimulant medication. There are a number of studies that show health benefits of coffee and there are zero studies that show health benefits of ADHD medications so if I had to choose between the two, I would choose to throw caffeine at my child instead of an amphetamine.

That said, I would wage money on the fact that a solid protein-based breakfast is a better option for children. So, if you want to try caffeine to see if it eases ADHD symptoms, remember to serve the coffee with some scrambled eggs and whole grain toast with peanut butter.

I think that this discovery is very important, but it is more important to prevent the ADHD problem by using a method to teach the brain how to concentrate and focus on a topic from the very beginning of life. The LAT system of early education is a five minuta a day technique which helps develop the brain greatly and reaulta are seen within a week if the babies are seven months or older. If the babies are younger the results are noticed when compared with other babies. The LAT system of early education consists of the codes of language in matrix forms giving the baby a logical way to learn how to read, to count, to add and to sudtract with only five minuts a day, the results are amazing with all babies.

Without intending any offense to Mr. Cardenas, who (I, out of an almost certainly over-developed and -generous sense of optimism & faith in the good intentions of my fellow human beings, presume to have only the best of intentions and, certainly, to be no mere “snake-oil salesman”), whatever he is peddling is, in my view, nonsensical mumbo-jumbo, at best. Indeed, if the form and content of Mr. Cardenas’s comment, itself, is any indication of the efficacy of his purported 5-minute-per-day(!) system of education, based on “codes of language in matrix forms,” then I would suggest that his comment, itself, is remarkably persuasive evidence of his system’s fundamental failings in, at least, such essential areas as basic spelling, grammar, and syntax. But perhaps Mr. Cardenas, himself, while an advocate of the referenced system, was never subjected to it. And, in any event, I digress.

The main point I want to make, here, is in reply to the implication that it is not only possible — but merely a matter of “changing up” curricula and/or methodologies — to “teach the brain how to concentrate and focus on a topic from the very beginning of life,” and the corollary implications that (i) ADD/ADHD is primarily a “learned behavior,” or a set of such behaviors, rather than something primarily and fundamentally “hard-wired” — whether genetically, or via some other organic, bio-chemical and/or structural mechanism(s) — into the brain and nervous system of individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and (ii) that ADD/ADHD is, at bottom, something that not only can but should be “cured.” (By way of ‘full disclosure’, please note that I avoid any and all such terms as “victim,” “sufferer,” “afflicted,” etc. in the context of ADD/ADHD, as it is my firm belief that the neurocognitive modus [or, perhaps more accurately, syndrome] currently known and/or referred to as ADD and/or ADHD is none of those things.) And, my response to those implications is simply this: the concepts underlying them are, at best, merely untested and, certainly(!), unproven theories; at worst, they are utter hogwash, consisting of half-baked ideas overcooked in a stew of prejudice and misunderstanding (primarily, over the meaning(s) and interpretation(s) of, and personal and/or social value(s) attached to, such terms as “normalcy,” particularly in the area of cognition).

So, “for a better future for all,” I would suggest that at least until (much!) more data becomes available and is clearly understood regarding the cause(s) of, as well as the efficacy of various forms of “treatment” for, ADD and/or ADHD, that all concerned simply keep an open mind (pun intended!). For example, the caffeine idea seems, to me, worthy of at least consideration. But also, if only on general principles, I would advise simply avoiding altogether anything even resembling a “miracle cure” (for ADD/ADHD or, indeed, anything else), such as a program purportedly consisting of 5-minute-per-day “lessons” and promising “results” in a week or less.
